Kate Hodgson

What are your main concerns within your practice?

My main concerns have always been screen-printing and at the moment I’m looking at colour separation, language, translation and what the process of screen-printing does to an image.

What are your influences?

My current influences are slogan t-shirts, I saw a lot of awful slogan t-shirts, when I was on my year abroad in Spain – I took a lot of photos of them. They are my source point.
Artists I am influenced by are Ciara Phillips, Jeremy Deller, Sister Corita Kent, along with a range of posters by Fraser Muggeridge.

What is the first thing you do and your process?

The first thing I do is take pictures and then manipulate them on Photoshop. Sometimes I’d start from research into other artists – it varies!

What do you enjoy most about the studio?

It’s nice to come into a working environment with friends. It’s always quite busy. The print room is quite nice – there are always people around who print all the time along with people who don’t know how to do it. Good knowledge transfer.

How has your work changed over the course of your degree?

That’s a good question! I feel that in first year it was quite small. Quite a lot of it was black and white, which is weird. Now it’s super colourful and super big. In first year I didn’t really know what I was doing – now I feel I know!

I don’t think it’s changed too much, I’ve always been interested in print… I’ve replaced more traditional methods with digital and Photoshop.

What are your plans after graduation?

Isn’t that the million dollar question?

My plans are to continue making work. I don’t really have a plan and I don’t really want to make one right now.
